Best Vehicle Trackers for Motorhome Owners: UK S7 & S5 Guide

Man reading motorhome tracker certification inside vehicle

What is the best vehicle tracker for a motorhome owner?

The best motorhome tracker is the exact category your insurer accepts, fitted to suit how the vehicle is powered, stored and used. S7 provides monitored location and recovery support; S5 adds automatic driver recognition; S5 Plus adds compatible start protection. Our fitted packages currently start at £169, with monitoring at £10.99 per month.

Your motorhome is more than a vehicle: it is the start of your next trip. Choosing its protection should be straightforward. This guide covers the decisions that matter before you order, including storage, subscriptions, existing devices and travel.

Which type of tracker does your motorhome need?

Option What it offers When to consider it
Thatcham S7 Monitored location protection without the S5 driver-identification requirement. Your insurer accepts the particular S7 device and you want monitored tracking.
Thatcham S5 Vehicle tracking with driver identification. Your policy specifies S5, or you want recognition of authorised use alongside tracking.
Our standard S5 Plus S5 tracking with tag-operated “No Tag, No Start” protection. You want compatible added start protection or need to meet a specific immobilisation requirement.
S7 battery self-fit tracker No vehicle wiring; four routine location updates per day, followed by remote setup checks. Your insurer accepts this exact self-fit S7 device and its reporting arrangement. It is not a substitute for required S5 protection.

Thatcham Research lists S5 and S7 as different certification categories. A higher number does not mean a higher level. S5 Plus is a description of additional features, so check the actual system rather than treating the name as a separate Thatcham category.

Start with the policy, not a motorhome value threshold

There is no single price threshold that tells every motorhome owner which tracker to buy. Read the security condition in your own schedule. Your insurer may specify a category, a particular device, an active subscription or other security measures.

Send the exact product details to your insurer if the wording is unclear. Caravan Guard’s motorhome tracking guide also advises owners to check that their insurer accepts the chosen system. For the practical steps, see what to do when your insurer asks for a tracker.

Our fitted motorhome tracking options and costs

Standard package Device and fitting Monthly monitoring Device plus 12 months
S7 £169 £10.99 £300.88
S5 £349 £10.99 £480.88
S5 Plus £449 £10.99 £580.88

Prices include VAT and exclude optional extras. Totals assume the current monitoring rate remains unchanged. With monthly monitoring, the first month is paid at checkout and subsequent payments are arranged separately. Prepaid options currently use the same monthly equivalent. Specialist packages and the self-fit battery device have their own product prices.

Choosing protection for long periods in storage

Tell us how the motorhome is powered when parked, whether you isolate the starter battery, and how long it normally remains unused. Ask about the chosen tracker’s power requirements and what happens when vehicle power is disconnected. Do not assume every hardwired device can keep reporting indefinitely without power.

Check alerts, app access and monitoring arrangements for your exact device. Keep contact details current so the monitoring team can investigate an alert. Tracking and recovery depend on device status, reception and network coverage; recovery is not guaranteed.

Professional installation or battery self-fit?

Our standard wired packages include professional fitting. We confirm the vehicle and location, agree an appointment and complete installation and activation checks. The certificate is issued after commissioning. Keep installation details secure and follow the installer’s instructions.

The separate S7 battery tracker needs no vehicle wiring and provides four routine location updates per day. Setup and remote checks must be completed before certification. Confirm that your insurer accepts this exact device and reporting arrangement; it cannot replace a required S5 tracker.

European travel and monitoring

Before travelling, confirm country coverage, mobile connectivity, monitoring support and any additional charges for your specific package. Check your insurer’s territorial conditions too. A UK fitting appointment or a GPS receiver alone does not establish monitored recovery coverage in every country.

Before you order

  • Confirm the exact tracker and category accepted by your insurer.
  • Provide the base vehicle make, model, year and powertrain.
  • Explain storage periods and battery isolation arrangements.
  • Check fitting coverage, preferred dates and access for the installer.
  • Review device price, monitoring and optional extras together.

Motorhome tracker questions

Do all motorhomes require S5?

No single category applies to every motorhome. Your own policy schedule determines the requirement; vehicle value alone does not decide it.

Does a tracker prevent theft?

Tracking supports location and recovery. Compatible immobilisation adds start protection, but no system makes a motorhome theft-proof.

Can I stop monitoring while the motorhome is stored?

Check your subscription terms and insurer’s conditions before changing monitoring. Storage does not automatically remove a policy requirement for an active system.

Use our tracker chooser, read the fitting guide, or contact us with your motorhome and policy details.
